CoI stated, in a workshop attended by 60 journalists: media is the main power in spreading the culture of integrity and anti-corruption

An official in CoI confirmed that the press and mass media have an effective and principal role in fighting corruption if they put this national goal in their priorities.

Mr. Waleed Abbas Jwad, the assistant DG of relation with NGOs office confirmed that the investigation and legal penalties represent the way of preventing corruption crimes. At the time CoI looking for advanced level of performance represented by preventing people from being corrupted. Prevention was adopted through cultivating of integrity, spreading code of conduct, eliminating the aspects of bribery and misappropriation of public funds.

He emphasized, during the aforementioned workshop, on mass media responsibility in achieving these goals. The workshop was organized in cooperation with the Iraqi assembly of journalist`s rights. He said that spreading ethical code of conduct as well as highlighting the risk of corruption will not be limited within CoI mechanism rather than others; each will be responsible from his position specially media.

The three discussed agendas in the workshop were provided by TV journalism coalition and taxes commission and the Iraqi assembly of journalist`s rights. The agendas related with the requirements of activating the role of media in fighting corruption and directing government officials to commit with code of conduct and active planning in reducing corruption.

The attendants agreed on the importance of organizing massive media campaign to spreading the integrity culture, expansion of investigative media, working on including these aspects with the education curriculum, establishing satellite TV channel specialized with strengthening the role of clergy in warning people from falling into sins.
