COI, Ministry of Justice sign cooperation agreement to fight corruption, recover money smuggled abroad

COI and Ministry of Justice, today, signed a joint cooperation agreement. The agreement provides for promotion of close cooperation between two parties in fighting and eliminating corruption, exchanging experiences in the legal field, and spreading a culture of integrity and transparency in order to achieve their objectives in implementation of Iraqi legislation.

The cooperation agreement has signed by Commissioner of COI, Ezzat Twfiq Ja’far, and Minister of Justice (Haider al-Zamili). The agreement confirms cooperation between two parties in field of filed lawsuit outside of Iraq related to extradite the wanted criminals, recover money derived from the corruption offences smuggled abroad, taking in consideration the laws and in competence of two parties, noting the two parties exchanged information and advice in the field of preparation of the proposed projects to conclude bilateral agreements and memorandums of understanding with counterparts in foreign countries.

The signed agreement based on the belief in the need to cooperate and work together to spread a culture of integrity, transparency, accountability, straightness and respect public service morals in public service in order to achieve justice. The agreement provides to form a high joint committee determining the detailed levels and cooperation, implementation mechanisms and conducting a review and evaluation of the level of implementation.

The two sides pledged to cooperate in order to speed up the implementation of the judicial decisions issued by the competent investigation judges related to send of the persons detained in Iraq Correction Facility for corruption cases under investigation in COI, thus contributing to the speedy completion of those issues.

The agreement addressed the coordination for preparing Joint research and studies related to combating and reducing corruption to ensure justice and protecting the rights of the state and citizens, as well as organizing conferences and mutual training courses, holding seminars and workshops for employees of both parties and exchange of publications between the parties and scientific material relevant to their competence taking into account the intellectual property rights and the private or other party`s proprietary rights.
