On the occasion of the International Anti-Corruption Day and coinciding with the declaration of victory over the remnants of the terrorist ISIS, CoI’s Education and Public Relation office organized a central celebration attended by the Chairman of Board of Supreme Auditing and a number of Inspectors Generals, as well as representatives of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
CoI Commissioner, Dr. Hassan al-Yasiri, said in his speech of the celebration, the growing danger of corruption around the world became a threat to the future of these countries, as terrorism threatens those States, pointing out that corruption is a source of terrorism, it’s funding, at the time terrorism is a fertile ground for corruption and both feed each other. He pointed out that the celebration of the International Anti-Corruption Day by the countries of the world confirms the universality of this phenomenon and it’s growing danger in all countries of the world, calling on the countries of the world to support the efforts of the monitoring bodies and not providing safe havens for tax and public money thieves.
Al-Yasiri pointed out that the battle of corruption requires concerted efforts and the contribution of all; because the success in eradication and corruption needs to have a deterrent and strict legal system, explaining that the current legal system against corruption is not at the required level, especially under the current situation of the country, Which led the Commission to draft several laws that were presented to the Parliament for voting.
CoI commissioner warned the anti-corruption and oversight bodies to fall in the trap of corrupts calling the state institutions and all society factions to stand with those bodies and support its efforts but not to stand against it since many voices recently raised for cancelling the IGS offices.
The CoI commissioner expressed his astonishment over some State institutions` procedures who drafted legislations relating to the oversight bodies without consulted the competent bodies, the matter in which impeded the efforts of the oversight bodies.
Al-Yassiri concluded his speech by saying: "all countries looking forward to a world free of corruption and we also looking forward to a pure Iraq not defiled by corrupters through adopting legal mechanisms and scientific procedures. We should reconsider the current legal system, as it does not comply with the corruption situation and tighten the sanctions resulted from corruption crimes". Al-Yassiri called upon CSOs to take its role to support the National oversight bodies especially they get together in a major gathering at Al Basra province in an educational framework prepared by Relations with the Non- governmental organizations office.
The Assistant of UNDP head (Ahmed AlYassiri) expressed his gratitude to CoI commissioner for the great efforts and fruitful cooperation with UNDP calling for unifying the efforts to fight corruption, which consumes 5% of the global outputs the matter in which has become a serious danger over the construction and development. He also mentioned that the International System is proud of partnership with Iraq represented by CoI and other Oversight bodies.
During the celebration events, a documentary film was produced to review CoI`s anti-corruption efforts on the international level, which resulted in unique and significant achievements in this field. Moreover, some poets delivered poetries praising the bravery of our military forces and calling upon supporting the oversight bodies to combat corruption and corrupts.
