CoI participated in 14th round of UNICAC states parties` conference from 24th to 28th of October 2011. This conference was held in Moroccan kingdom and the delegation included deputy commissioner judge Izat Tawfeeq Jaafar as president with membership of Sameer Faraj, the director general of prevention office, and other members.
The conference discussed several axes and among which the corruption ability to destroy economies of developing and developed countries as well as the people demands for using more active means of fighting corruption and emphasizing the prevention against corruption, considering decisions of 13th round in Duha as the spine to be given some time for fully activating UNCAC provisions. It also confirmed the necessity of coordination among prosecutor general authorities regarding assets recovery and exchanging experiences and best practices in this field. It emphasized the importance of international cooperation in this respect and activating STAR global initiative to play active role in determining places of smuggled assets and monies.
The committee, organizing this round, recommended that the mechanism for implementing the UNCAC and meetings, for government experts, should be adopted and held to enhance the international cooperation for recovering assets.
The Iraqi delegation held, during this round, many meetings with the participant’s delegates like for example organizing a meeting with the Turkish delegation to discuss the mutual cooperation and know more about the Turkish experience in fighting corruption field and recovering assets in particular, and another meeting with the Palestinian delegation, upon their request, to make use of the Iraqi legislative experience in fighting corruption field.
Also, the Iraqi delegation participated in the seminar, held by the Arab Network to enhance integrity and transparency, to study and discus the Network project and work plan for activating the Arab Regional Initiative in fighting corruption field.
