In the framework of CoI’s seeking for further benefits from the leading global experiences in the field of combating corruption, and to activate the provisions of the memorandum of understanding concluded with the South Korean Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission signed in April last year to highlight the role of law enforcement institutions in accelerating economic development, The Iraqi Anti-Corruption Academy organized a series of dialogue seminars at the Integrity Commission during which the former South Korean Attorney General (Joo Yeon) delivered lectures on anti-corruption mechanisms in major cases, shedding light on the ways of dealing with the defendants in it, whether they were politicians or well-known businessmen, pointing to the role of oversight bodies in the search for information and ways to ascertain them through careful and professional investigation.

The series of lectures, which were attended by a number of Directors General and more than 180 participants, focused on the need to provide the necessary transparent economic environment in order to reduce corruption’s infiltration into public and private sector institutions, tenders and contracts, both governmental and of private sectors, and highlighted well-known experiences that have led to the ability of Korean regulators to capture directors of major global companies known worldwide and politicians for their association with major corruption cases related to bribes and fraud in elections.

He explained the mechanism of criminal investigation in cases of corruption, the method of dealing with the accused persons, and ways to obtain information without resorting to extracting confessions through pressures.

The lectures included exchanging dialogues and asking questions and in-depth discussions between the lecturer and participants, resembling the role of oversight bodies as the doctor who eradicates malignant diseases from the body of society.

Noteworthy to mention that CoI had concluded a memorandum of understanding in April last year with the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Authority on bilateral cooperation in the field of combating corruption, which led to the consolidation and strengthening of cooperation between the parties, increasing capacity and institutional building between them, as well as exchanging experiences and best practices in fighting corruption.
